Day 2
Day two began early – I was awake at 5 a.m. in anticipation of the shuttle landing, thinking it was at about 5:30. Turns out it wasn’t until 7:15. Oh well, t was a beautiful morning. The landing was exciting as usual. Didn’t sleep well anyway as it was still about 90 degrees when I crawled into the tent and then the wind blew all night long, though it didn’t seem to cool things off any.
I rolled out of the campground about 9 o’clock and discovered that the Badlands entrance was just a few miles from my scheduled stop at the Minuteman site. Since my tour wasn’t schedule until 1:30, it was the perfect way to spend the morning. I took a leisurely drive through the Badlands park, stopping to take some pictures. It’s an amazing landscape. I can’t image being one of those early pioneers running into that mess in a covered wagon.
The Bandlands loop drive (westbound) ends up at Wall, SD. I stopped at Wall Drug, but it was pretty much as I remembered, so I don’t think I spent 5 minutes there. From there it was a bit of a backtrack, only 20 miles, to the Missile Site. It was pretty interesting, but I think it’s clear what spending 24 hours at a time locked in a box prepared to destroy the world does to a person. One of the Park Service Rangers who led the tour was a former Missileer, and he was just a bit odd. Not that there’s anything wrong with that!
I pulled into the Mt. Rushmore campground about 6 and have my campsite set up, so I’m going to grab a bite to eat and then think I’ll head over to Mt. Rushmore – I think they still light it up at night.
Prairie Evening redux

Evening on the Prairie
Despite my late departure, and thanks to changing time zones I arrived at my first stop in Midland, SD at 6 pm. Only 1.5 hours behind “schedule”. I’ve got my camp set up and am pretty comfortable. Got the iPod going for tunes and I’m sitting here posting things and surfing the internet. Not too bad. That is, if I ignore the sweat running down my neck. Even though it doesn’t seem that bad, it is 97 degrees!!!. That’s down from the 109 degrees initially reported by my Weatherbug software when I first logged on about a half hour ago. There had been a nice breeze that was keeping it bearable as I set up my tent, but that’s pretty much gone now. There are some big clouds brewing to my northeast, I hope they keep moving that direction.
I’ll be crawling off to roast in my tent in a little while. I hope I can get some sleep. I’ll be getting up at the crack of dawn to watch the shuttle landing, which is supposed to be a little after 7 – Eastern Time, so I have to get up around 5 – some vacation!
Day 1 – So it begins
Well, we haven’t had much rain here in weeks, but wouldn’t you know it – at about 7:30 this morning it started to rain. I pushed my departure time back to 10 a.m. in hopes of getting some top-down driving in before the day got really hot.
Shortly after 10 – yes I was running a bit late, I did a final check of my house, in particular the aquarium, before leaving. Arrgh – I had cleaned and changed the filters yesterday in preparation for the trip and now there was a minisucule leak, but a leak nonetheless, in the return line. So I had to tear that back apart and put it back together again and check for leaks anew.
11:30 a.m. Only 2.5 hours late, but I’m on vacation so who cares!!!
Time to hit the road!
It’s T-minus about 11 and a half hours until my planned departure for my Western Road Trip 2006.
I’ve got my car about 90% packed – just have to throw the last few things in before I roll in the morning. I had hoped to have a luggage rack to mount on the trunk, but the company making one specifically for the Solstice has been experiencing delays – it was supposed to be ready at the end of May, but as of today there’s still no confirmation.
So in order to make the room I need for all my stuff I ended up removing the passenger seat. That made lots of usable room, so I’m good to go. I just have to ignore the warning about having the airbag serviced – don’t worry, it’s just the passenger airbag that I had to disconnect when removing the seat.
Now that I see what I have packed, I don’t think the luggage rack would have been such a good thing anyway. What I really need is a little trailer to pull behind…
