Day 6/7 – perhaps I’m jinxed

Rather than sitting at the steamy campground, I found a nice air conditioned theater to spend the evening in.  I went the the latest DisneyPixar movie, “UP”, which did not disappoint.  Then I saw “The  Taking of Pelham 123”; with Denzel Washington and John Travolta – Great flick!

Then I was all pumped up for the launch of STS-127 and as I had to be at the visitor center no later than 2:30, I decided to head on over.  Along the way I pulled off Hwy 1 in Titusville at a place called Kennedy Point Park (there’s no park as best as I could tell).  In any case, it’s approximately 12 miles across the Indian River to the launch pad.  I snapped a couple of pictures including the one above which shows Endeavour on the launch pad in the center of the image and the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) on the right-hand edge.

From there, I headed over to the visitor center which was only about a 15 minute drive.  I parked and got my gear situated; cameras, tripod, chair, bug repellant, snacks, book, iPod, etc…  As I was walking across the parking lot, I overheard a woman walking in the opposite direction utter that dismal word “scrubbed”.

That’s right, yet again, the mission I’m here for has been scrubbed.  And the best part is, at least according to initial reports, that it’s the same problem that scrubbed the launch of STS-119 when I was here in March!  Well, at least this time, I’ve got the time to hang out.  Only questions are; how long, and what am I going to do.  Time will tell..  They will meet Saturday morning to assess the issue and hopefully set a new launch date.  Looks like I won’t be going to D.C. this trip.

Day 6 – final leg to KSC

So today was a driving day from Cordele, GA to Titusville, FL near Kennedy Space Center.  I got here just after 4 this afternoon and got my camp situated, and now I’m sitting in the shade updating my blog and sweating profusely.  Supposedly it’s 89 degrees, but it feels like about 120 to me!  OK, the heat index says 96, for whatever that’s worth…

Anyway, I can’t handle this heat and it doesn’t look my campsite will have shade for a couple of hours.  So, like last night, I’;m going to go sit in the air conditioned comfort of a movie theater for several hours!  It works out fine, because I have to be at the space center by 2:30 a.m. anyway.  The launch is scheduled for 7:17 Saturday morning (Eastern time) – so they make sure everyone is there early in order to load up the buses and get people to the viewing site.  Hopefully they get us out there before sun-up, some pictures of the launch pad all lit up should be pretty cool.

That’s all for now, more to come after lift-off tomorrow!

On the road again

Like my 2006 road trip, this one too is beginning on a rainy note.  Hopefully, the rest of the trip will see sunny skies, or it could be a long two weeks;-)  I’ve just finished packing the car and trailer and am getting ready to hit the road in just a little while.  This first leg on the way to Mammoth Cave is going to be an overnighter.  I figure I’ll drive for about 4-5 hours and then break for a couple.  It’s about 13 hours to Mammoth Cave, so with breaks I’m figuring to be there sometime late Sunday morning.  I’m going to try to take some tour through the cave and then get to my camp site and relax.  Monday will be a short hop over to Great Smoky Mountains which is where I’m staying until Thursday when I will head to Georgia and then on to Florida on Friday.  The launch is still on for Saturday the 13th.  Unless I happen across some wifi access, this will be the only post until Thursday when I reach the the KOA campground in Georgia.

A little revision

DSC01209

So after giving it some thought, I’m revising the itinerary just a bit.  I’m now going to depart on Saturday the 6th and drive to Mammoth Cave National Park.  I’ll spend that Sunday night there and then head over to Great Smoky Mountains on Monday as planned.  This just breaks up the outbound leg of the trip a little better.  As you can see in the above picture, I’ve got my trailer assembled and hooked up.  It pulls quite nicely and more than doubles the cargo capacity of the Solstice and I don’t have to remove the passenger seat.  I’m still working out some glitches with the wiring (brakes and signals work, but the running lights don’t).  Should get that squared away tomorrow.

Road trip firming up

I think I have my schedule worked out for my upcoming road trip.  I’ll be departing on Sunday, June 7, heading for the the Smoky Mountains.  I’m going to drive straight through in order to get there late Monday afternoon.  I’ll relax that night and then spend Tuesday and Wednesday touring the park.

On Thursday, the 11th, I’ll drive to Stone Mountain Georgia and camp somewhere in Southern Georgia.

On Friday I’ll push on to Kennedy Space Center.  If everything stays on track I’ll see STS-127 lift off bright and early on Saturday.

Sunday I’ll head up towards Appomattox Courthouse, probably spending the night somewhere in NC.

Monday I’ll head up to D.C. after touring Appomattox.  I’ll spend Tuesday to Thursday touring D.C.  I want to try to see all the major monuments and then a couple of days in parts of the Smithsonian.

Friday the 19th I’ll head for home, driving straight through again.  I should make it home late Saturday afternoon at which point I’ll crash…

It’s coming together

So my road trip is coming together.  I’m going to take two full weeks off, the week before the scheduled launch and the week after.  On the way down, I’m planning to spend a couple of days at Great Smoky Mountain NP and a quick stop at Stone Mountain, GA.  After the launch it’s up to D.C. for a couple days then home.  I installed my trailer hitch on Monday – I still have to get the lights hooked up though.  I ordered a trailer today which should be here by Friday at the latest.  It’s nothing spectacular, but it beats pulling the passenger seat like I did in ’06.  I may try to get it painted to match the Solstice later this summer, but for now black will do fine.

Giving it another shot

So I’m going to give it another shot this year.  Endeavour is already on the launch pad as the emergency rescue shuttle for the Hubble Servicing Mission (STS-125).  The chance of delays should be minimized since it had to be ready to go in the event of damage to Atlantis during it’s mission.  The launch is currently scheduled for June 13.

I’m going back to Plan A, which is a road trip allowing me more flexibility in the event of delays.  I’m planning to take two or two and a half days to get to KSC.  Given enough time, I’ll try to swing through Great Smoky Mountain NP and Stone Mountain, GA.  If everything goes according to plan, after the launch I’ll head up the coast and spend a few days in D.C.  I’m thinking I’ll spend a day seeing the monuments and then a couple days at the Smithsonian before heading for home.

We’ll see how it goes…

Oh No!

So I made it to Florida last night anxiously awaiting the launch of STS-119.  I got to Kennedy Space Center around 11 in the morning, not too early since the launch was scheduled for 9:20.  I toured part of the visitor center, then had lunch with an astronaut (John Creighton) along with a couple hundred other people.  Then went to the ApolloSaturn exhibit where I snapped the picture of Discovery on the launchpad above.  It’s really there, just from the angle its mostly hidden by the gantry structure.  Leaving the Apollo exhibit I overheard some people talking about a scrub and then sure enough the bus driver confirmed.  At that time they were looking at a possible launch tomorrow night.

However…

The fuel leak they discovered has now pushed the launch back to Sunday night at the earliest, but listening to the launch managers it sounds more like Monday, maybe…  It’s even possible that it could be delayed until April.  That would actually be best for me, since I can’t stay for even a Sunday launch – work responsibilities call – a delay until April might let me still make it back here for this mission.

We shall see…

STS-119 is a GO! again…

After lots of delay involving  damaged flow control valves STS-119 was finally given a GO on Friday.  I’ve got my trip re-booked and am ready to go.  I’m heading down to Orlando on Tuesday afternoon.  The launch is slated for 9:20 Wednesday night.  I’m spending the rest of the week in Florida and will be back home on Sunday afternoon.
